Abandoned and not haunted.

I am doing this mock blog as I am tired of all the news articles that start off with “30 haunted abandoned buildings” 33 of the most wonderful abandoned buildings in the world” and “14 romantic abandoned buildings in the world.

There are just too many of them on the Internet. so here is my selection of places that are just abandoned. There is nothing special about them, they are not haunted and they are not romantic. They are just abandoned buildings that people take photos of. sure the photos are great but it doens’t make them haunted or romantic.

Greece and graffiti.

When i was in greece in december I took a stroll around athens and noticed there was lots of graffiti around. so i took my camera with me and started snapping photos. here are just some of the snaps i took .ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

The other day was was reading a news article about a small lake near the westgate brdige that had turned pink. This pinkness in the water is caused by an algal bloom that is triving in the water. algal bloom colours can range from purple, pink, red and green.

this particular algal bloom at the park was pink.

here are two photos from my flickr page.

The hypocrisy of the cave clan.

the cave clan started in the 80′s when 3 guys went down a drain. nothing exciting about it really. Over the last couple of decades the cave clan have gathered in members and have ventured into exploring abandoned buildings rather than just drains. I have never been a member of the cave clan and nor will I be after the events of the past year or so.

It all started off for me when I began to use my camera and take photos after not using it for a while. My interest was abandoned buildings and then onto drains. I have never been one for joining a group or one for rules. That meant the cave clan wasn’t for me, as they have rules about what photos you can post and what information you can share with your friends about new abandoned buildings. If I have information about an abandoned building that I know a friend doesn’t know about I’d share it. If I were in the cave clan I wouldn’t be allowed to share said information with them. that to me is just wrong and reminds me of a cult that tries to split the ‘URBEX’ community apart for their own ego.

Having said that, I do appreciate the Cave clans dedication to preserving abandoned buildings from tagging and graff. That alone should not be a reason to withhold information from other non CC explorers who you trust who also would like to goto these places and photograph them. I don’t understand that rule,  But I am not one for rules. For me it just seems a little bit elitist and egotistical.

The hypocrisy that I am talking about is their stance with graffiti in drains. This is a quote from the CC Wikipedia page.

“The Cave Clan has long officially distanced itself from graffiti, despite the historical practice of discrete tagging as a historical documentation practice.”

Graffiti is graffiti. it doesn’t matter how big the tag is or where it’s done. it’s still graffiti.
Is tagging an entire wall of a drain in big letters considered discrete?

In my opinion I am not convinced that it’s discrete and a blatant message telling others that venture down the drains that they rule the drain. But that’s just my opinion. No one has claim to the drain and should tell others what to do down there. Only the government has that power and the water authorities.

The drains that I have explored in Melbourne (where the cave clan started) are littered with tags and graffiti from CC members. how can one group be so opposed to graffiti and then tag and graff the drains they are protecting against graffiti artists?

discrete.

Back home :-(

Post holiday depression set in soon after i arrived back in Melbourne. It has stayed with me for a long long time. Yes this is going to be one of those posts where people complain about not being back on holiday and not appreciating what they have. Sure i can go on and on about all the friends i am seeing after 5 months of holidays, but that’s no comfort. I miss Europe and the people there really miss Prague and the great time I had there.

With that said i have been doing NOTHING since back at home. sleeping 6 hours a day, playing playstation 3, and going out taking photos. The inspiration for photos has stopped and the dream of moving to Europe take over my thoughts. With lack of things going on in my life I have left things slip. my blog, flickr, and tumblr. All these things have slipped on the wayside.

But things are changing Big things are happening.

Here’s a few photos that I have done with the help of friends. Photos are the only thing keeping me sane at the moment.

What does 5 months look like in europe?

Photoshop

So while in Milan I didn’t get much sleep and t all caught up with me when I arrived in florence. the first day in florence I was dead tired and coming down with a flu or a cold. so i spent the day in the hotel alone and watched the avengers on the computer.

That night I got really bored and still didn’t feel like leaving the hotel. What does one do when they are sick and stuck in a crappy hotel?

well the answer is take photos of yourself and have a night of sitting in front of the laptop listening to music and Photoshop them. FUN!

here are a couple of photos that I did that night.

The holiday was/is going really well. Whilst in berlin a few mates and i were going to go on a road trip through czech republic, austria and a couple of other countries. when we arrived in prague we noticed this MASSIVE TV tower sticking out like dogs balls. It was so ugly and yet so beautiful at the same time we had to go and see it up close. we drive to it and noticed that there were statues of babies crwaling up the tower.

On closer inspection we saw that they had no faces and they looked ‘bashed in’

This was weird and interesting at the same time. We didnt expect to see this in prague. My mate looked up on the internet who made the statues and we saw that he had done other stuff around the city. it was too late to go visit them all as we had to leave.

Бузлуджа.

This place has been one abandonment that i have always been interested in. the soviet feel of it and the mosaics on the wall have always appealed me to it. While traveing around europe the past few months i knew that i will see it at some point.
A plane to bulgaria and meeting some friends from Australia in sofia and a car is all we needed. we set off on a road trip to buzludja. we got there on the wednesday. had a look around this fantastic structure. couldn’t find a way in. spent 30 mins looking and wondering how to get in without breaking anything.

by chance a mate saw a way in. we needed some rope so we went to the local hardware store. (30 mins away) on our return it was too late in the dayto go in.

The morning had come along and off to explore this building. once at the top we met some locals who were looking at the sourrounding mountains. we chatted to the husband and wife. turned out he had gome to this building when it was opperational.

we asked him questions about it and bulgaria. he didn’t have a good experience of the place. he doesn’t like it. didn’t want to ask too many details. He also mentioned that it’s going to get renovated/restored soon but doesn’t know when when.

after a good 30 – 45 mins of chatting they left. Time to head in…..

this is what we found.
